Why do YOU value the Athens Drive Community Library?
We suggest that you talk about WHY you want to keep our library in our community, why it is important to you and your family, how it serves our community etc. You can use some of the information shared in our powerpoint presentation , and here are some sample letters.
An example of a wonderful testimonial from Martique Lorray about the value of the Athens Drive Community Library to her family may be heard at the Youtube video link below (recorded at the October 15 City Council meeting):

And a heartfelt letter to the county commissioners from Michi Njeri may be found here.
Required Lot Size for A Replacement Library
Multiple officials have indicated recently that a large lot size (5 to 7 acres) is a requirement for any candidate library location. Below is an analysis of current library lot sizes, estimated from Google Maps. It may be seen this new criteria is inconsistent with the standards applied to most of the current library system locations.
Proposed Site On Yates Mill Pond Road Would Service 17 Percent Fewer Individuals and Benefit Wealthier and Less Diverse Populations
Athens Drive Community Library has been a cornerstone of our community for 46 years. It serves a fundamental role as a resource for education and upward mobility for West Raleigh residents. We evaluated the demographics and income of those living within a 30-minute walk of the library and compared that to the demographics and income of those living a 30-minute walk of other libraries. The purpose of this analysis was to compare how our level of minority status and level of income compare to other communities with library access.
Existing Site vs. Proposed Site Analysis. Our analysis also showed that the proposed replacement site for the Athen Drive Community Library would service a population of 9,539 individuals within a 30-minute walkshed, which is 1,965 individuals fewer than the existing site’s walkshed population. The proposed replacement site would also service a population with a median household income of $88,078 compared to the existing population of the Athens Drive Community Library median household income of $66,412. The proposed replacement site would service a minority population of 38.7 percent compared to an existing minority population of 45.7 percent.
This equates to moving the library and servicing a population with less racial diversity and higher income. It also means the proposed library site would service 17 percent less individuals. This is the equivalent of taking away a valued community resource and handing it over to fewer people who already possess greater income and social advantage.
Comparative Analysis of All Wake County Community Libraries. An analysis was also undertaken to determine how the community within a 30-minute walk of the Athens Drive Community Library compares to the communities serviced by other libraries. Findings demonstrate that of the 12 existing Wake County Community Libraries and the one proposed replacement site at Yates Mill Pond Road and Tyron Road, the Athens Drive Community Library supports the community that is the 5th most populous, the 6th most racially diverse, and the community with the 3rd lowest level of income.
