The Wake County Board of Commissioners will shortly decide on the site of the "replacement" for the current Athens Drive Community Library. The choice is between possible sites in our neighborhood close to the high school, and a site on Tryon Road, miles from the high school and the neighborhood. We hope you will join us in telling the Commission why a site in our neighborhood is so important to you, and to all of us at the Dec. 1st Board of Commissioners meeting at 5pm at the Wake County Justice Center (wear red!).
The Athens Drive Community Library (ADCL) has been a valued part of our community for 46 years! In light of plans to renovate Athens Drive High School, the Community Library will be moved out of the high school to make room for other functions. Fortunately, the voters of Wake County generously supported a bond issue in 2024 that includes a replacement for ADCL. There is strong support for keeping the library in our community! We are a diverse community, with walkable streets, conveniently located on bus lines, with dense and affordable housing, and a history of support for, and appreciation of, the library.
A search for suitable sites within the community has been challenging, given the lot size requirements imposed by county planners, and the density of housing in the area (and the population of the neighborhood is growing!). There are still, however, suitable locations in our neighborhood that are easily accessible by foot, bus, bike, and car, and close to or at the high school. Our elected local representatives have expressed clear, strong support for keeping the library in our neighborhood, which is great! Continued advocacy by our community will help us keep the library.
The alternative, unfortunately, is at the corner of Tryon Road and Yates Mill Pond Road, which is neither bikeable, walkable, or "bus-able" - it is only driveable! The biggest drawback, of course, is that it is no longer in our neighborhood, meaning not a replacement, but the closure of our community library, and then building a new library somewhere else..
Great turnout of support for our library at a recent Board of Commissioners meeting!
