County Commissioners vote 5-2 to keep the library on Athens Drive!
County Commissioners vote 5-2 to keep the library on Athens Drive!
The Wake County Board of Commissioners decided on Monday June 15, by a vote of 5-2, to purchase a site on Athens Drive for a new library to be built in our community. This is the outcome so many people have worked to make happen. Thank you to all who spoke up and showed their support for keeping a library in our neighborhood! And thank you to the voters who supported the library bond issue, and to the County Commissioners who listened to our appeals and voted for the Athens Drive location. We won!
The Athens Drive Community Library (ADCL) has been a valued part of our community for 46 years. In light of plans to renovate Athens Drive High School, the Community Library will be moved out of the high school to make room for other functions. Fortunately, the voters of Wake County generously supported a bond issue in 2024 that includes a replacement for ADCL. There is strong support for keeping the library in our community! We are a diverse community, with walkable streets, conveniently located on bus lines, with dense and affordable housing, and a history of support for, and appreciation of, the library.
The search for suitable sites within the community was challenging, given the lot size requirements imposed by county planners, and the density of housing in the area (and the population of the neighborhood is growing!). Our elected local representatives expressed clear, strong support for keeping the library in our neighborhood, which is great! Continued advocacy by our community helped us keep the library.
The alternative location was at the corner of Tryon Road and Yates Mill Pond Road, which is neither bikeable, walkable, or "bus-able" - it is only driveable! A larger lot, easier to build on, and cheaper, but much less accessible than the Athens Drive location.
Great turnout of support for our library at a recent Board of Commissioners meeting!
